Types and traditions

Amish

Amish quilts are reflections of the Amish way of life. Because the Amish people believe in not being "flashy" or "worldly" in dress and lifestyle, their quilts reflect this religious philosophy. They use only solid colors in their clothing and quilts. Some church districts limit the use of certain colors such as yellow or red because those are considered "too worldly". Black is a dominant color. Although Amish quilts appear austere from a distance, the craftsmanship is often of the highest quality and the stitching forms vigorous patterns that contrast well with the plain background. These traits appeal to a modern aesthetic; antique Amish quilts are among the most highly prized among collectors and quilting enthusiasts.

Bangladeshi Quilts

Bangladeshi quilts mainly known as 'Kantha' are not piecing together of patches. They are two to three cloths joined together for thickness. They are made out of worn out clothes (saries) and mainly used for bedding, as a blanket, and sometimes as decorating piece as well. They are made in the leisure times of women mainly in the Monsoon before winter.

Baltimore album

Baltimore album quilts originated in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1840s, and are made up of in blocks in which each block is appliquéd with a different design. The designs are often floral, but many other motifs are also used.

Hawaiian

Hawaiian quilts are whole-cloth (not pieced) quilts featuring large-scale symmetrical appliqué in solid colors on a solid color (usually white) ground fabric. The Hawaiian quilt has received a stunning new make over and found a new re-generated market in the last ten when Hawaiian quilt designer Dean Miller launched a series of innovative Hawaiian quilts that seeped into the mainstream market blending traditional themes with a more modern feel.

Tivaevae Cook Island quilts

Tivaevae are also quilts made by Cook Island women for ceremonial occasions. Quilting is thought to have been imported to the Islands by missionaries. The quilts are highly prized and are gifted with other finely made works on important occasions such as weddings, christenings etc.

Ralli quilts

Ralli quilts are traditional quilts made in Pakistan and India. Ralli quilts are called rilli quilts somewhere. Handmade ralli quilts are used as blankets and bedspreads. These ralli quilts make use of patchwork, appliqué and embroidery. Parents present rallis to their daughters on their weddings as a dowry.

Quillow

A quillow is a quilt with an attached pocket into which the whole blanket can be folded, thus making a pillow.

I bought a pair for my Mother and a pair for our home. These are really great scissors. The design makes them so easy to use. Cutting Christmas wrapping paper was a breeze! LOVE 'EM!

These scissors work great. They are sharp and very easy to operate when they are in the open position. There is a saftey lock on them that can be a little difficult unlatching. My Mother has problems with her hands and this was the only drawback to them. But other than that I myself found they work nice and I actually perferred them to the traditional style scissors for cutting.

The Fiskars 9911 model pictured with this listing is the older version of these same scissors -- which is the reason I chose to purchase them here. However, it appears that Fiskars no longer produces the version pictured. They new model has been redesigned to be more "ergonomic" I suppose... but the slide lock mechanism on the new models isn't located in the same spot which makes it slightly less convenient for me large hands. Also, the lock on the new model tends to slip forward when cutting and hinders the range of the scissors and will occasionally slip back and let the scissors open when they are in my holster. All in all I have always been happy with the Fiskars scissors -- the blades stay sharp and the cutting action is smooth -- but as with some other products in the past (think "New Coke") the older model is superior to the newer.

Open Easy As Stated Not real great for very controlled cutting IMO Guess best used for cutting straight lines and heavy items like card board? Find my self grabbing my old standby regular scissors a lot of times. RagenRat

I got the small shears last year and loved them but they were not good for cutting loarge pieces. I got 2 pairs of these and they have replaced by conventional scissors in my heart. No pain in those knuckles and a nice loose hand hold

excellent product , feeds trouble free in my epson C88+ Used to make quilted wall art labels

I tried three different manufacturer's printable fabric sheets. All were 100% cotton. Of the three, EQ Printables held the ink better and gave a sharper definition to the photo being printed. However, like the other two, EQ Printables still bled some when soaked in water as directed. When I used the fabric softener/water* directions, the bleeding was commendably less. (* 1 part fabric softener to 3 parts water)

A quality product;i.e., well made, balanced, sharp, that is above lower cost department store brands. Therefore, the price point is competitive with other brands.

I bought these on a recommendation made in Coffin's "Shirtmaking" book, and he's right, these scissors are great. They cut curves right up to the thread, they easily slice through several layers of fabric, and they're good for cutting notches in pattern pieces. An all around handy pair of scissors.

This is a wonderful Gingher scissors that added greatly to my sewing needs. All was sent timely and as promised.

My wife is an avid quilter and prefers to do things the old fashioned way. She was skeptical about this gizmo when she opened the package, but she soon found out that it's accurate and a time saver. Fast service from this company, too!

I am numerically challenged when it comes to figuring what fabric I need to finish a quilting project, I am clueless...I used to just buy several yards of fabric and hope I had enough. Now I can find out exactly what I need even down to how much to cut for borders and I think that is wonderful! Works great...a great tool for a challenged quilting friend or relative!!

I absolutely love this calculator. I used to do everything by hand trying to figure out my yardage and then add some for good measure. I usually always came up short somewhere and then couldn't find the fabric I needed later. This calculator certainly has made things easier and more accurate!
