Christmas Quilt Patterns
Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. It refers to both the day commemorating the birth, and also the Christmastide season which that day inaugurates, concluding with the Feast of the Epiphany. The date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be Jesus' actual date of birth. Christmas festivities often combine the observation of the Nativity with various cultural customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. Although nominally a Christian holiday, it is also observed as a cultural holiday by many non-Christians. Of note not all Christian denominations, like Jehovah's Witnesses, certain Seventh Day Adventist churches, and Members of the Living Church of God celebrate christmas.
In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas Eve is the preceding day, December 24. In Germany and some other countries, the main Christmas celebrations commence on the evening of the 24th. The day following Christmas Day, December 26, is called Boxing Day in the United Kingdom and many countries of the Commonwealth, and called St. Stephen's Day or the Feast of Saint Stephen in Catholic countries. The Armenian Apostolic Church observes Christmas on January 6. Eastern Orthodox Churches that still use the Julian Calendar celebrate Christmas on the Julian version of 25 December, which is January 7 on the more widely used Gregorian calendar, because the two calendars are now 13 days apart.
The prominence of Christmas Day increased gradually after Charlemagne was crowned on Christmas Day in 800. Around the 12th century, the remnants of the former Saturnalian traditions of the Romans were transferred to the Twelve Days of Christmas (25 December – 5 January). Christmas during the Middle Ages was a public festival, incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens, as well as gift-giving.
Modern traditions have come to include the display of Nativity scenes, holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas or Santa Claus on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill and peace.

Quick Country Christmas QuiltsReviewsAny quilt book by Debbie Mumm can be counted upon to deliver certain things: lots of charming designs organized by theme so you can mix and match, excellent instructions, and inspiring photos. This book also gives you numerous small projects you can make for gifts, some really quick decorating ideas, and a nice section on organizing your holiday preparations. In addition to the specifically Christmas designs with Santas, angels, nutcrackers, and such, there are projects with hearts, tools, fish, apples, and animals which could be made at any time of year. The general directions are excellent. While there are no projects for full-sized quilts, the book has enough information and enough attractive quilt blocks that you could easily come up with one yourself. Contrariwise, if you have a book of quilt blocks and need directions for putting them to use in gift and household items, this book will also fill that need.Quilters need this book for their Christmas shelf, and people who might like to dabble in quilting can use it to get started. Christmas at the Bears Paw RanchReviewsI received this book in just a few days after placing my order. I enjoyed looking thru the book and couldn't wait to start making some of the projects. I am enjoying the book....I love the country feeling it gives along with the great ideas and clear instructions....ready to make one of them soon. The projects in this book are warm and cozy and have that great Eleanor Burns traditional-yet-fun feel. With a wide variety of projects and the author's exceptional skill at explaining, showing the shortcuts, etc. -- this book is a must-have when you get the urge to start your Christmas sewing and quilting. If you love seeing exactly how these techniques are done, get the Christmas At Bear's Paw Ranch DVD too; it's wonderful! I really have enjoyed the book. It has so many good projects and they are explained so a beginner sewer or quilter can do them. I made the Christmas stocking right away and started the place mats and table runner. Like the title implies, it's all about "Christas". Some of the projects can be used anytime of the year. I love it!!! Nan H, Iowa Excellent resource of holiday projects. No doubt, this is my number one favorite of several Eleanor Burn's publications. This book includes removable template preprinted patterns; conveniently spiral bound, easy to follow directions and the photography is excellent! Very pleased with this book, as it is a most welcome addition to my quilting project library. Well worth the investment. By far, Ms. Burns is one of the finest teachers for all levels of quilting. Looking forward to her next book! A+ and an apple for this great teacher! Average Rating:![]() |
